Canal Days Out – Saturday 18th September – EVENTS PROGRAMME

Canal Days Out kicks off this Saturday 18th September for the first of two consecutive weekend events celebrating all that is great about Glasgow Canal. To help plan your day we have pulled together this handy list of event times and important information. We hope you have a great day and join us again next week for our must-see narrowboat flotilla!

Saturday 18th September 11am-3.30pm

CYCLING

Guided Cycle Rides led by Free Wheel North at 11am, 12noon and 1pm (45 mins) – PRE-BOOK HERE

Leisurely Led Cycle Ride with Sustrans departing at 2pm – PRE-BOOK HERE

Civic Street Bike for Good Cycle Hub Launch Day – 1-5pm, Civic House
Events include confidence building led rides by the canal, try out e-cargo bikes and find out how you can loan one, learn in a group cycling lesson for beginners and those returning to cycling, get your bike fixed by Dr Bike and find out about services for commuters. There will also be free street food, face painting, and henna. Please note some elements of the launch event are bookable activities and part of the Glasgow Women on Wheels Cycle Festival which means spaces are only available for women and nonbinary people. ARTS AND MUSIC

Pop-up opera performances by Scottish Opera at Edington Street – PRE-BOOK HERE
11am – A Little Bit of Bubble McBea – a magical, musical story for children aged 3 to 7 years.
1pm and 3pm – A Little Bit of the Pirates of Penzance – a mini 30 minute opera, perfect for audiences of all ages.

Experience all the drama and wonder of grand opera on a miniature scale, with intimate open-air performances brought to life by a storyteller, two singers, instrumentalists – and a sumptuous set of specially created illustrations.

Arts Yard Open Day – 11am – 3.30pm – No need to pre-book, just drop-in

The Carnival Arts Yard is an arts and event space and studio facility, home to a thriving grassroots cultural organisation and talented artists and makers from around the world. Pop-in and see what goes on behind the scenes as preparations get underway for the narrowboat flotilla on 25th September.

WATERSPORTS AND SKATEBOARDING

‘Come and Try’ Kayaking (12noon – 1.30pm) and ‘Come and Try’ Stand Up Paddleboarding (1.30pm – 3.00pm)
FREE taster sessions at Pinkston WatersportsNo need to pre-book, just drop-in

25 minute taster sessions for ages 7+ No need to pre-book, just turn up on the day. Buoyancy aids will be supplied. Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet, shoes that cover your toes and stay on your feet (no Crocs or flip flops), a towel and spare clothes. Wetsuits not provided but you are welcome to bring your own if you have one.

Skateboarding lessons at The Loading Bay Skatepark at 12noon, 1pm and 2pm (60 mins) – Fully Booked

WALKING

Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve and the newly opened Garscube Link are great places to explore the area at your leisure. The Claypits Viewpoint provides stunning views across the city and there are plenty of paths and trails to follow across the 6.7 hectare site. Don’t forget to have a try on the new big slide at Garscube Link – this area is also perfect for a picnic.

KEEPING SAFE

We ask our visitors to please follow Covid-19 government guidelines by making use of our hand sanitising facilities situated throughout the event site and wearing a face covering when indoors. Please maintain social distancing when standing in busier areas. Thank you for your co-operation in making this a safe event for all to enjoy.

Due to social distancing and to keep visitors safe, most events and activities are pre-bookable. Glasgow Canal Days Out will continue to monitor and follow Government guidelines in order to take the appropriate safety measures and actions.

HOW TO GET HERE

If you are planning to visit one of our Canal Days Out events, why not consider reducing carbon emissions by travelling to the canal by foot, bike or public transport instead. Level access and exits to the canal can be found in the following locations:

Cowcaddens subway station is also a 5 minute walk away

FOOD/DRINKS

Please note that there will be no food/drink stands available on Saturday 18th September so we recommend bringing a picnic with you. You can also help by reducing waste and leaving no trace by taking litter home with you to recycle.
Ocho Cafe is located at Speirs Wharf and there are a number of local food places nearby on Garscube Road and Maryhill Road.
